Mayor Pedersen Named Mayor of the Year - 2019
Mayor Barrett Pedersen was Mayor of the Year by the West Central Municipal Conference. He was given the Donald E Stevens Award of Excellence for his exemplary leadership and his devotion to the Village and to the region. The Mayor was selected for his vision in making Franklin Park a leading manufacturing center and a safe, stable, family-friendly community.
Metropolitan Water Reclamation District's 2017 Biosolids Beneficial Reuse Award
The Village was recognized for our continuous commitment to promoting biosolids to the public. The Village planted heirloom corn, pumpkin and sunflower seeds in soil provided by the MWRD which contained composted biosolids near the King Street Pumping Station which resulted in a robust crop harvest.

Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) President Mariyana Spyropoulos and Chairman of Finance Frank Avila presented Mayor Barrett Pedersen with a special award recently. The award is in recognition of the Village of Franklin Park’s commitment to the health and welfare of our residents and the environment by utilizing natural lawn care on all Village-owned properties and for encouraging and educating residents and businesses about natural lawn care techniques.
Village Earns Recognition for Excellence in Financial Reporting -2010 - 2018
Franklin Park's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report has been awarded the Government Finance Officers Association's Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. This is the eighth consecutive year that we have earned this highest form of recognition in government accounting and financial reporting. Congratulations to everyone who worked hard to make this award possible!
Governor's Sustainability Award - 2014
The Village of Franklin Park was awarded with the Governor’s Sustainability Award as a result for its commitment to excellence through outstanding and innovative sustainability practices, including the building of a LEED Gold Certified Police Station. The Village was also recognized for replacing outdated vehicles with energy efficient Electric Vehicles and for installing charging stations at Village Hall, the Metra Train Station and encouraging Walgreens to do the same. The Village encouraged residents to more fully utilize the existing community-wide recycling program, increasing the amount of recycling per household from 8.2 to 10.9 pounds per week. An anti-idling policy restricts police vehicles from idling on area streets resulting in gasoline savings of $40,000 and eliminated the release of 27,818 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere annually.
LEED Gold Certification - Franklin Park Police Station - 2014
The Village's Police Station was awarded LEED Gold certification by the US Green Building Council. This was made possible in great part by a $985,000 IEPA grant that provided for state-of-the art storm-water management practices that will benefit the region. The facility optimizes energy performance, reduces water-usage and incorporates regional materials and recycled content into the project. Innovative features include a cistern to capture and reuse rain water for landscaping and to flush toilets. These sustainable features will reduce costs for the police department and create a healthier environment for the staff and the surrounding community.
Midwest Pesticide Action Center - Individual of the Year - 2013
The Village was recognized for its commitment to pesticide reduction and utilization of natural lawn care techniques on all Village-owned property. Mayor Pedersen was lauded for his dedicated and continuous commitment to sustainability leadership.
Alliance of Illinois Manufacturers - Government Partnership Award - 2014
Mayor Pedersen was this year’s recipient of the Government Partnership Award from the Alliance for Illinois Manufacturing. The Mayor was selected based on his support and advocacy for manufacturers throughout the region.
Illinois State Crime Commission’s Municipal Leader of the Year - 2013
Mayor Pedersen received the 2013 Municipal Leader of the Year Award for demonstrating an impressive record of achievement in crime prevention and public outreach. In particular, they cited a strong commitment to regional cooperation.
Green Intelligence Award – 2014
Mayor Pedersen is the 2014 recipient of the Green Intelligence Award from the West Central Municipal Conference. He was recognized for the Villages many eco-friendly initiatives and long-term commitment to sustainability including replacing outmoded Village vehicles with electric vehicles, installing charging stations at Village Hall, the Metra station and Walgreens, increased recycling programs with residents, instituting by ordinance a natural lawn care policy on all Village-owned property and utilizing a County grant to replace inefficient street lights with high efficiency LED lights.
