Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
For many Illinois households, energy costs place a severe and continuing stress on a family’s budget. In some instances, the household is forced to make painful decisions regarding which bills to pay and which necessities to survive without. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is designed to help eligible low income households pay for winter energy service.
LIHEAP provides a one-time payment to the utility companies on behalf of recipients. In addition to seniors, LIHEAP is open to persons and/or households with disabled members who receive SSI and SSDI benefits.
Income eligible residents may file for help with winter home heating bills through LIHEAP. Please bring the following documents in order to file for benefits:
- Social Security Card
- Photo ID
- Current Nicor bill
- Current ComEd bill
- Proof of income for 30 days
